Welcome to the IT4arts website.

This web site started as a result of a joint initiative from the Arts Panel of the Information Technologists' Livery Company (WCIT) and the Baring Foundation with a programme called IT4Arts. The site is designed for all types of Arts Organisations that are a registered charity, to help them take the correct steps in introducing computers into their organisation, and subsequently getting the most out of their IT resources - financial, people and technological.

The IT4Arts programme consists of this website, a series of workshop events on IT in Arts Organisations and a peer support community for participating organisations. (More details).

Any Arts Organisation that is a registered charity in the UK is more than welcome to join IT4Arts and can then attend the events, or use the information in this site to their benefit, all entirely without charge.

The next workshop is on Thursday 9th October 2008 - It will be at the Foundling Museum, 40 Brunswick Square, London, WC1N 1AZ and the topic is web teams, web tools and web suppliers.

At the June planning workshop this was identified as a hot topic. Many organisations are in a quandary about whether web budget and resources should be in the IT department, in Marketing or in another department, and whether groups like Education should be able to create their own independent websites. Then there’s the question of whether to have web techies in-house or not – and if not, how to select a reliable, affordable yet exciting web development company. And when you look at another organisation’s website, just how much of that did they have to program themselves – all those blogs and videos and moving 3D images – or did they buy some little web tools that did it all for them?

These are the sort of questions this workshop will address. It’s completely focused on an arts organisation’s own website, because we have recently held workshops on the use of virtual worlds and social networking. Michelle Wright, Head of Development at the London Symphony Orchestra, who have long been at the forefront of the strategic use of the web, is going to give a keynote speech about opportunities, issues and latest ideas for arts organisations to engage people via the web for pleasure and lifelong learning.
